Scott J Bowles Essay question: If you were sitting in your living room and talking with President Obama, what advice would you give to him on how to fix our economy? If I were extended the honor to speak face-to-face with our President-elect, I would advise Mr. Obama on the importance of consumer confidence in our Nation. I understand from Mr. Obama's speeches and lectures throughout the campaign trail and words from those who associate closely with him that he truly believes he can lead this Nation into a new era of prosperity and success. However, I would highly advise Mr. Obama to ensure that, at no time, he would ever feel or believe that he could do this on his own merits, strength, or abilities. Wise words were given by a previous US Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, when he uttered the following: "During the hour of a man's success, applause can be his greatest danger." Mr. Obama is highly popular with the American people, as many view him as a political savior, of sorts, to save us from dire economic perils. It is within this illusion that many have fallen victim where I would seek to counsel with Mr. Obama. I would exhort him to lovingly embrace the American people during one of their darkest hours, to show them that the strength of our Nation does not lie within one man, but within the seal of our Nation: E Pluribus Unum or Out of many, One. I would remind Mr. Obama that it was not General George Washington that led the Revolutionary Army to victory over the British Empire, but rather it was the numerous dedicated and loyal troops under his command that would proudly die to maintain the rights of Liberty. I would remind Mr. Obama of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who led our Nation through a vicious two-front war against the Nazi regime and Japanese Empire, all the while balancing a delicate economic situation at home. Yet at no time did President Roosevelt feel he was the source of our Nation's success or failure, for he knew of his limitations, both physically and mentally, when he said "I'm not the smartest fellow in the world, but I can sure pick smart colleagues." I would remind Mr. Obama of an individual he finds great strength in, President Abraham Lincoln, who, under his leadership, successfully bound the wounds of a Nation at war with itself. However, it was not by his authority alone which brought about this success, but the hundreds-of-thousands of Americans who shed each other's blood on Gettysburg, Antietam, and Fort Wilderness who gave validity to President Thomas Jefferson's words: "And what country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants." Throughout the darkest times in our Nation's history it has not been a single man that has brought about change and prosperity, but it has been the Balm of Gilead produced through the faith, integrity, and values of the American people working together for a purpose greater than their own self interest. Overall, there is little Mr. Obama can do himself to fix our ailing economy, but if he were to successfully encourage and incite the American people to live within their means, assist those who need our help, and to look at our economy as not one built upon vast buildings of power and luster within the financial districts of our great cities, but rather upon the shoulders and weathered hands of a dedicated People, then he would begin to lay a foundation for generations of prosperity in our Nation. Overall, I would encourage Mr. Obama to remain open and honest with the American people, to never lose their trust, for it is only trust that will propel the US economy out of the bottomless pit of recession and depression.
